The Effects of Group Mental Health Education on Awareness of Mental Disorder Self awareness and Mental Health Management in Middle School Students

Abstract
Purpose: This study was aimed to investigate the effects of group mental health education for middle school students being resided in G city.

Subjects: The participants of the study were 484students of 1st grade in middle school.

Method: Group mental health educations were conducted to 484students: one 45-minute-session per week during 7 weeks. Data were collected from Sep. 20, 2004 to Dec. 18, 2004 using awareness of mental disorder, self-awareness and mental health management questionnaires. Collected data were analyzed using SPSS of window version 11.5.

Results: The results of this study were as follows.
1) There was a significant difference(p<.024)in entire mean score of self-awareness, awareness of mental disease and mental health management after receiving group mental health education. There were significant differences in awareness of mental health disease (p<.033) and mental health education (p<.001).
2) Before taking mental health education, there was only significant difference in economic status of general characteristics.
3) After taking mental health class, there was no significant difference according to general characteristics except religion.
4) Before taking mental health education, there were significant differences in sex and school of general characteristics about self-esteem.
5) After taking education, there were significant differences in only school of general characteristics about self-esteem.

Conclusion: It seems that mental health education should be considered as an effective awareness and mental health management for middle school students. As a results, this study suggests that continuous education should be applied for improving self-esteem and mental health management. And modifications to the current program would be required to give best effect.
